Memory: The last birthday with Mom (BR 2011 #0 11-15)
Theme: Rain or windmills. I went with "child raised to be a murder machine" in honor of the executioner instead.
Canon: You can read it here. The memory begins on the page where Damian jumps out of a plane double-fisting machine guns, and ends in the pagespread where Damian and his mother fight and he stands victorious over her with a katana in her face.

  • Damian is 10 years old in this
  • He skydives out of a plane double-fisting machine guns and absolutely obliterates a squad of enemy skydivers mid-air.
  • Runs out of bullets, but don't worry he can kill people in mid-air JUST as effectively with a simple knife. Tangles a bunch of them up in their own parachutes and taunts them about it as they fall to their deaths
  • He has katanas now. He's still so good at murder.
  • Even giant man bats can't stop him

  • FINALLY HE LANDS. He lost his parachute he digs his katanas into the sides of a snowbank to slow his descent. He's very cool.

  • Finally he and his mom fight so he can earn the right to know who his father is. He wins and she says she's making him wait until their big trip anyway. Moms!!!

Memory: The Art Teacher's Last Day (R: SoB #4)
Theme: Beheading (as close as I could get)
Canon: You can read the comic pages (3 total) here NOTE:The middle page is only included for context, not something Magpie actually sees at all.

In this memory:
  • Damian's painting a stormy ocean landscape even though the day is bright and sunny, and he's sitting atop rolling hills covered in soft green grass. He's clearly just finished some kind of fight, and apparently gone directly to painting.
  • His instructor is gushing about his skill with both a blade and a brush, and offers to take the prizes from the mission Damian just finished to his granddad's citadel.
    • Damian was into the praise until the instructor promised to come back and turn it into a real lesson. Lame.

  • In the memory, the instructor never comes back. Damian keeps painting until his mother calls for him and takes him to the prison cell they're now holding his instructor in.
  • In the span of 20 seconds he learn that his granddad wants to blind his instructor for looking at him, and that Damian has the option of sparing the instructor, but only if he accepts the punishment in his place.
  • Also he's like 9 in this memory
  • His instructor begs Damian to his face to spare him, and Damian considers how much his grandfather would kill him if he were blind and says 'lmao no'


What he learned:
  • At the time this happened, Damian was upset his instructor messed up at all. Felt like he should've known better (because EVERYONE knows not to look at gramps when he's ritualing)
  • He didn't want to see the instructor blinded, but 100% believed Ra'as and his mother would follow through with blinding him instead if he'd spared him
  • And he did feel offended at being asked at all on some levels. He is a kid who's been raised as a warrior prince his whole life at this point. Like, how dare someone beg him for mercy over their mistake??
  • He was so tired, but he was definitely going off to another lesson or mission at the end of the memory
